What Is Inpatient Physiotherapy?

Inpatient physiotherapy is a service provided for those admitted to New Victoria Hospital, usually as part of routine surgery. As part of this service, one of our senior physiotherapists will see you during your stay to help optimise your recovery.

This service is required dependent on your surgeon and the type of surgery you are having. If the surgery you are undergoing is not routinely seen by our inpatient physiotherapists, you can still request to be seen. This should be discussed with your surgeon and a referral can be made to us.

What Does Inpatient Physiotherapy Involve?

The treatment provided by your physiotherapist is dependent on the type of surgery undergone and the post-operative instructions provided by your surgeon. The treatment may include:

  • Provision of equipment
  • Mobility assessment & practice
  • Stairs assessment & practice
  • Pain management advice
  • Washing, dressing & sleeping advice
  • Movement & strengthening exercises

What Happens When I Am Discharged?

On discharge, your surgeon may request that you continue rehabilitation under the guidance of outpatient physiotherapy. This can be continued here at New Victoria Physiotherapy, or can be with a local physiotherapist known to you.

Should you be seeing your own physiotherapist, we will provide you with all the necessary information. This should be passed on to your physiotherapist so they are fully aware of your surgery and any restrictions following.
